THE TUPLER TECHNIQUE®
The simplest description of an umbilical hernia is a bulge that you see affecting the navel or the area immediately surrounding it.
I have often been asked by colleagues and clients about the effect of the Tupler Technique® on a hernia. Having personally had an umbilical hernia that I had "surgically repaired with mesh", I am in a position to describe my experience in the hope that it may eliminate any doubts of the effectiveness of the Tupler Technique® either with a current hernia or following hernia, or any abdominal surgery.
IS THERE ANY BENEFIT TO ACHIEVE BY FOLLOWING THE TUPLER TECHNIQUE® HAVING HAD HERNIA SURGERY?
There are so many benefits to following the Tupler Technique® - focusing on closing the diastasis is only one. I myself have mesh following an umbilical hernia operation and can feel the mesh and stitching under my skin. I do believe it is obstructing my diastasis from closing completely but the other benefits I have gained from following the Tupler Technique® are way more significant .... smaller waist, strong core/abdominal region, improved posture, no lower back pain, the profound impact of healing myself and the resulting boost to my self confidence is immeasurable.
WHAT ADVICE SHOULD I GIVE TO A CLIENT WHO HAS HAD HERNIA AND/OR TUMMY TUCK SURGERY?
We as Tupler Technique® Trainers cannot be expected to understand completely what a particular surgeon has done - often the surgical notes do not provide a clear indication. This is also evident as in many situations, the patient has little understanding of the particulars of their surgery. Rather than feeling responsible to explain to clients their individual situation, we need to focus on the things we do know and understand.... having a stronger core through the Tupler Technique® will benefit anyone. Even more so those who have had abdominal surgery. If a client has had significant hernias or a tummy tuck operation, that tells us that the abdominal region is so unstable resulting in the hernias in the first place. Strengthening the abdominal region at the very least will provide more stability & assist to protect the integrity of the stitching of the hernia surgery or tummy tuck.
MY CLIENT HAS HAD A HERNIA SURGICALLY REPAIRED WITH MESH. I HAVE NO ACCESS TO THE SURGEON'S NOTES - WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE?
There is no telling how the mesh is placed or how it is fixed to the surrounding tissue or to what tissue it is specifically stitched to. Post surgery adhesions and other scar tissue is difficult to predict in terms of its nature and distribution. Regardless of the nature of surgical repair, the above fact remains; your clients entire muscle cylinder that connects the ribs to the pelvis was inherently weak and the hernias were a symptom of that. The muscle simply popped out at its weakest points. The surgery therefore can only sew into weak tissue and the Tupler Technique® is the best way to strengthen your client's remaining musculature and create the health benefits that she was chasing through the surgery.
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE TUPLER TECHNIQUE® FOLLOWING A SURGICAL HERNIA REPAIR WITH MESH?
To be honest, I didn't give my hernia site and mesh much of a thought. I began with a 30.5 inch belly and a diastasis of 4.5 in the centre. I followed the Tupler Technique® guidebook exactly (with many extra reps) and by day 4-5, began noticing significant changes.... my belly measurement dropped before my eyes, my back felt stronger each day and my back pain became a memory. By the end of the first 6 weeks, I had lost 5 inches from my belly and had begun to close my diastasis. I believe the mesh is preventing the abdominals from closing - I think the strength is in the muscles but the mesh is an obstruction. (It's almost like if it was possible to have the mesh removed, that my abdominals would spring together immediately!) Despite this, the benefits far out way this one indication. I feel a strength in my abdomen that in all my years of fitness, I have never been able to achieve. The appearance of my hernia scar has improved and if it wasn't for my hernia site, my tummy looks and feels better than before I had children (hard to remember though as my oldest is 25!) My daughter has had to return my slim fitting tops and my confidence and pride in myself is constantly at a high!
So I would tell potential clients that closing the diastasis is only one indication of the benefits and success of the Tupler Technique®. For people with hernia mesh, it should not be the sole focus. You can still achieve a flatter tummy, smaller waist and the strongest core you have ever had. If you have suffered from back pain caused by a diastasis, the Tupler Technique® will help to reduce and in many cases eliminate such pain. In short, having hernia mesh is no reason at all not to learn and follow the Tupler Technique®. The feeling I have achieved from healing myself through the Tupler Technique® has had such a profound impact on my life!!
I hope this gives potential clients some confidence in the Tupler Technique® Workshops. My personal before and after photos are on this website; click on this link: /Before-After-Photos - Client 1. Oh and my tummy strength and appearance continues to improve to this day!!
JULIE TUPLER WRITES ABOUT HERNIAS...
If you have an umbilical hernia, more than likely you have a diastasis recti (separation of the outermost abdominal muscles). If you have surgery for the umbilical hernia, but don’t close the diastasis recti, there is a good chance your hernia repair will not last!
Closing a diastasis recti is all about healing the connective tissue. When you heal the connective tissue with the research-based Tupler Technique® Program, you bring support to the umbilicus. You will see your belly button go from an outie to an innie! You will also get a flatter belly because your muscles (not connective tissue) will be supporting your organs.
Healing connective tissue is not an overnight process. This program takes time, effort and a commitment to doing all 4 steps of the program for a minimum of at least 18 weeks.
If you decide to go the surgery route for whatever reason, it is still important to do this program to “prepare” for the surgery. This program will strengthen your abdominal muscles before surgery, teach you how to use them correctly and prepare you for the activities you will be doing during the recovery process. As a result, you will be able to maintain the integrity of the sutures so your surgery will last.
So the bottom line is….you have nothing to lose by doing the Tupler Technique® Program. Chances are if you are really diligent about doing this program you will close your diastasis and fix your umbilical hernia. If not, you will have a better outcome for your surgery.
